10 Questions to Ask Yourself Before Making a Clothing Purchase

Sep 14, 2020

HAVE YOU EVER HAD “BUYERS REMORSE”?

I can bet that most of the cases you’ve heard about or experienced this were in regards to large purchases - but, have you ever experienced buyer’s remorse with clothing purchases?

A lot of times we don’t feel the remorse set in right away - until one day, we open our closet and find an overwhelming stash of clothing overflowing at us.

Then, perhaps we realize, that we have made several purchases in the past that were potentially not needed.

SO, HOW EXACTLY DO WE AVOID DOING THIS IN THE FUTURE?

I’ve been in this situation many times before, so I’ve come up with 10 questions to ask yourself before making a clothing/accessory purchase in the hopes that you cut back on unnecessary clothing purchases!

(Also - at the bottom of this post I have a downloadable version of the questions that you can easily save to your phone to refer back to!)

HERE ARE THOSE QUESTIONS!

  1. Why do I need to buy this? - If you find that this answer is vague or nonexistent, perhaps the best action is to put the piece back on the shelf. If you have a clear vision for this garment, chances are you won’t regret buying it later.

  2. Will it lead to more clutter? - Be honest with yourself. Will this item truly enhance your wardrobe or add to your cluttered closet? If you can only envision it being a clutter contributor, put it back.

  3. Do I have the budget? - Do not make the mistake of spending money with the mindset that “I’ll figure out the budget later”. That mindset is only good for getting you into trouble. Trust me. Been there several times.

  4. Could this money be spent on something I’d appreciate more? - Your hard-earned dollars are valuable! Make sure you are using them to their full potential by purchasing items that you will fully appreciate.

  5. Is it my style? - If the answer isn’t honestly 100% yes, do not buy!

  6. When/ how will this get worn? - Do you actually have a plan for this? If not, it’s more than likely an impulse buy and something you could go without.

  7. Am I buying this just to buy something? - This happens a lot when shopping with friends and everyone has bought something but you. Don’t fall into this trap!

  8. Will I get my money’s worth from this piece? - This question applies more so to more expensive investments. It’s crucial that you aren’t spending a significant amount of your hard-earned money on a piece that will only be worn once!

  9. Do I own something similar? - If so, will this new potential purchase be replacing this item? Or can I resort to what I already have and put this back on the rack?

  10. Will this item be contributing to who I want to be? - Be HONEST with yourself. This question ties into number 5,  but also, if you want to be someone who is more diligent with their purchases than make sure that purchasing this item won’t put you farther away from the person you aspire to be.
