Closet Clutter - 10 Ways to Eliminate It
Nov 23, 2020Question 1: Do you want a tidy and organized closet?
Question 2: Do you need to get rid of some clothing to make that happen?
Question 3: Do you find yourself struggling to know what clothing items to part with?
If you answered yes to all 3 of those questions, you’d be the perfect candidate for the following:
Closet Clearout Challenge - 7 Daily Challenges designed to help you clear out your clothing clutter, one section at a time - delivered straight to your inbox!
In order to obtain the tidy and organized closet that you wish for, it will come as no surprise that often the first step to getting there is to purge the clothing that is no longer needed.
The two products I listed above will help you do just that - but if you’re still with me I want to give you 10 categories of clothing that I recommend you part with to start your organized-closet-journey:
1) Remove duplicates. There is no reason to have eight black T-shirts in your closet. Unless they are part of your daily uniform, you only need one. Pick one and part with the others.
2) Remove “sentimental-only” pieces. This one can be challenging, but trust me it’s for the best. If you are holding on to something only for its sentimental place in your life, it needs to leave your closet. If you cannot bare parting with it completely, consider up-cycling into something that you can and will use.
3) Remove clothing that doesn’t fit in your lifestyle. If it doesn’t make sense with your current lifestyle, get rid of it as it is highly unlikely you will get enough wear out of it.
4) Remove damaged clothing. This one may seem obvious, but resist the urge to give in to the possibility that you “might get it fixed one of these days”. If it’s been sitting in your your closet damaged without you making plans to actually fix it - you won’t.
5) Remove clothing that doesn’t fit. Just get rid of it. It’s not worth hanging on to. It will just take up closet space while reminding you of what your body is not like right now.
6) Remove clothing you don’t wear. It’s simple, really. If you haven’t worn it in 12 months - it’s gone.
7) Remove clothing you don’t love. Basics (think camis, underwear, etc) are exempt from this rule. Go through your pieces and anything you no longer love - get rid of it!
8) Remove clothing that isn’t your style. First - determine your personal style! Then, get rid of anything that doesn’t complement your style.
9) Remove clothing you don’t feel good wearing. Think about it. Why would you hang on to pieces that didn’t make you feel amazing?
10) Remove clothing that you honestly don’t see yourself wearing much again. You need to be honest with yourself here - whatever doesn’t make the cut is gone.
