From Clutter to Cash | Simple Ways to Make Money Selling Your Clothes
Jan 18, 2021Have you ever successfully purged your closet only to keep the box of clothing you planned to part with in your entry way forever?
I have!
The idea of selling your unwanted clothing may seem like an excellent idea, but the whole process seems painfully redundant. I get it.
Or, perhaps you have tried your hand at selling your clothing only to end up with hours of work and not a penny in return. Is it even possible to truly make money from your clothes? Yep, it totally is.
Here are 5 simple tips that will make your clothing-selling journey easier, and more successful.
1) KNOW THE WORTH
Before randomly picking a price for your item, do your research to see what similar pieces are selling for on various resale platforms. Pricing too high will result in very little interest from prospective buyers and pricing to low will result in you not getting the return you deserve!
2) PICK YOUR PLATFORM
There are many different avenues that you can go through when selling your unwanted clothing. Online resources such as ThredUp, Poshmark and Mercari are great options in addition to brick and mortar consignment and resale stores. Make sure you do your research into each of these platforms to determine what is best for you and where your pieces are the most likely to sell.

3) UP YOUR PHOTOGRAPHY SKILLS
One huge reason that an item will get bypassed on an online selling platform is because the image wasn’t aesthetically pleasing or well shot. It’s so important to take your time when photographing your item. Use good lighting, stage well and be sure to capsule all of the details.
4) INCLUDE MEASUREMENTS
When listing a piece for sale be sure to include the measurements along with the size in the description. Sizing runs different between brands and designers and consumers like to be able to compare their measurements with those of a potential clothing purchase.
5) BE HONEST
This goes without saying, but tell the truth about your pieces! Don’t lie to make them look like they are in better condition than they are. This will cause you to loose credit as a respectable seller.
On the flip side, don’t downplay your pieces either. If there is a flaw, make sure it is documented and a photograph is included.
