The Great Closet Purge: How to Organize Your Closet
Sep 25, 2019When it comes to cleaning out your closet, there many reasons (beyond that a clean and organized space is amazing) this should be done regularly.
Purging your closet helps you truly see your clothes, the pieces that you love, without them being cluttered and mixed in with the items you haven’t worn in ages. It also helps you to really appreciate what you have.
So, how does one effectively purge one’s closet?
Well if there is one thing I love more than clothes, it’s organizing them!
I’ve got you!
STEP 1: EMPTY YOUR CLOSET
Take everything out and make a huge pile of ever garment that was in your closet.
STEP 2: DIVIDE YOUR CLOTHING INTO TWO GROUPS: “KEEP” AND “GET RID OF”
Sometimes making the call regarding what stays and what goes can be difficult. And if you’re not careful, taking too long to decide on what goes back into your closet can result in you keeping too much – and then you’re back where you started!
It needs to be a quick decision – and I’ve created a flow chart to help you decide what stays and goes! You can download it here.
STEP 3: SORT BY SEASON
After you have your keep pile set, sort your items by season. I would recommend splitting this group into spring/summer and fall/winter.
STEP 4: STORE THE OFF-SEASON CLOTHING
Who wants to open their closet on a warm spring morning only to be greeted by their chunky cozy sweaters? Not me!
By storing the clothing that is unfit for the current time of year, it’s like a shopping spree every time the seasons shift when you open your storage bins and find your favorite clothing ready to be worn again.
STEP 5: PUT THE CLOTHING BACK IN YOUR CLOSET
I can’t help you with this.
Organize as you wish.
You’re welcome.
Also – be sure to repeat this process regularly.
