The Journey
Feb 24, 2018There is something about getting on a plane that ignites something in me.
The take-off will forever be exhilarating, the view above the clouds breathtaking, no matter how many times I am in the sky.
There is something about traveling by train that lets me be a part of the route in a different way.
Experiencing the past, present and future in the swift movement of the cars as they pass through landscape that has witnessed centuries of history - all the while I am listening in on the conversations of those around me bringing me back to the here and now.
There is something about a road-trip that stirs up an interesting combination of nostalgia and excitement for me.
As I drive (mostly ride - I hate driving - and am terrible at it), I remember the journeys of the past - the giddiness I would feel as the temperature would get warmer and warmer with each rest stop as the promised land (Florida) got ever closer. At the same time, I still look forward to seeing and experiencing places that are new to me.
No matter how I get there, the beauty is always there. Whether it is in my memories of family trips gone by, the stunning fluffy skyline created by the clouds that I see from my airplane window, or the passing of tiny villages at high-speed as I glide along the tracks.
Not only is the journey itself a time to catch up on reading, Instagram, or napping (if you're like me and are on a road-trip - i literally can't stay awake in a moving car or bus), but it is a time to soak in the beauty and the blessing that you are "going" and new adventure soon awaits.
But the journey often takes on a negative light. It is often chaotic, exhausting and frustrating. It can be expensive, test your patience and make you question whether or not the destination is even worth it. "Beautiful" is often the last word you would use to describe the journey. And not only that, it is often forgotten about. Overshadowed by the destination that gave purpose to the journey in the first place.
But as important as it is to remember where you are, or look forward to where you're going, it's also just as important (if not more so) to remember how you got (or will get) there.
Because if it wasn't for the journey, you would have never reached your destination. No matter where that may be.
