Transforming Into 30

Jun 26, 2019

Well, today is the day that I officially leave my 20’s and enter my 30’s.

Is it weird?
Do you feel any different?
Are you sad about not being in your 20’s?
Have any big plans?

These are all questions I anticipate I’ll be asked – especially because I am the first one in my friend group to turn the big 3-0.

The truth is, I still feel like I’m 18.

Also, my hair is already grey (thanks to regular visits to Engedi Salon and frequent uses of purple shampoo to ice myself out).

So, I guess it’s weird?
No, I don’t feel any different.
If I think about it long enough I guess I’m a little sad?
My plans? Nothing crazy. Just taking the day off of work and heading to the spa.*
*Note: I drafted this post before I knew Tom was planning a surprise birthday gathering for me last weekend :) that was fun!

In reality, it’s just another June 26. Another birthday for me.

This year, because culture says I am hitting quite the milestone, I decided to make two lists to take me into my next chapter of life.

One list, things I’m leaving behind with my 20’s.

The other, things I’ll strive to gain for my 30’s.

So there you have it.

Cheers to 30.

WHAT I AM LEAVING BEHIND IN MY 20S:

  1. The need for affirmation - it’s time to trust my gut when making decisions. No more looking for approval from everyone else first.

  2. Caring what other people think of me - I so badly wish I learned to do this much earlier in life. It is quite a challenge to waive off others’ opinions of you.

  3. A life ruled by “the list” - Some days, my list is my saving grace to getting things done and staying productive. Other times I feel like a total prisoner to it. It’s time to make sure that the list never takes priority over what is truly important in my life.

  4. Fear of the future - As hard as it is to accept, fearing the future will in no way be an asset to me.

  5. Quieting my beliefs to avoid conflict - I hate conflict so much. I avoid it like the plague. Often, I mute what I truly think based on my beliefs in order to avoid conflict. It’s time to stop that and not be ashamed of my values.

WHAT I’LL GAIN IN MY 30S

  1. Not feeling guilty about taking time for self-care - real talk though, society needs to stop making us feel guilty for taking the occasional “me-time-break”! After all, pretty sure it’s been proven that making time for yourself makes you a better mother, wife, friend, employee, etc.

  2. More Education - I want to keep learning - I need to keep learning so that I can stand my ground on issues and defend my stance. Also I really want to be fluent in French.

  3. Bravery - I desire this asset in all senses of the word. If you want an amazing reference for this quality, I recommendEat Cake.Be Brave.” by Melissa Radke

  4. Self-Love - simply, I just need more of this in my life. And may I add unconditional self-love.

  5. Embrace myself 110% - I need to stop apologizing for who I am!

And there you have it.

Do me a favor and check back with me in 10 years to make sure I lived up to these lists.
