What to Do With Unwanted Clothing

Sep 22, 2020

So. You’ve cleaned out your closet.

First of all,

GOOD FOR YOU!

Doesn’t it feel amazing?! Call be crazy, but the feeling of having a freshly cleaned out closet is so freeing!

(P.S. If you haven’t gone through your closet yet, that’s step one. These resources can help!)

Now that you’ve gone through all of your garments, you only have what you love and truly need in your closet.

BUT… WHAT ABOUT THE PIECES THAT DON’T BELONG IN YOUR CLOSET AND YOU ARE READY TO PART WITH.

What do you do with those?

Here are some ideas:

SELL THEM

Perhaps the most enticing option for your “not-keep” clothing is to sell them!

I’m sure it will come as no surprise that there are several places available that are seeking gently used clothing such as:

POSHMARK

Poshmark is an app with a social media-like feel where you can list your items for sale, easily communicate with potential buyers and even negotiate on price. When an item sells, you’ll receive a pre-paid mailing label via email that you simply need to print. Then, just pack and ship the item! Once the buyer accepts the purchase, you can get paid by direct deposit, mailed check or Poshmark credit!

THREDUP

thredUp is one of my personal favorites lately. You can request a Closet Cleanout bag which ships right to your house FOR FREE! Then, you simply fill the bag with your gently used, clean and trendy items and put the bag on your front porch for pickup the next day! Once your bag arrives, the wonderful folks at thredUp will list your items on their website and once they are sold, you get paid! Anything they don’t choose to take will be donated (unless you want them shipped back to you for an added cost).

EBAY

eBay isn’t just for those high-ticket electronics. Clothing is also a hot seller! List your items for sale at either a set price or a starting price and let the bidding war begin!

THE REALREAL

If you are looking to part with Luxury items (think Chanel, Louis Vuitton, etc) this is your place. The RealReal offers a couple options for parting with your items. You can book a virtual appointment with their Luxury item experts to discuss your pieces or you can ship them directly via UPS. The team at the RealReal will do all of the legwork and you’ll get paid monthly via check, direct deposit or site credit every time one of your item sells!

TRADESY

Similar to Poshmark, on Tradesy you are responsible for listing your own pieces but get to set your own price. Once your item is purchased, just pack and ship! You can then get paid by direct deposit or store credit!

FACEBOOK MARKETPLACE

If you’re looking to make a quick sale locally, Facebook Marketplace is your place! Sone of the advantages of selling in Facebook Marketplace are that you avoid taxes and selling fees - plus there are SO MANY FACEBOOK USERS that you’re pieces are bound to sell, fast!

LOCAL BRICK AND MORTARS

Search your area for shops that want your stuff for cash! In addition to chains like Plato’s Closet, Uptown Cheapskate and Style Encore, boutique consignment and resale shops are popping up everywhere and are dying for inventory!

DONATE

If you’d rather not go through the process of listing your items for sale, or perhaps you don’t believe you have items that are worth much - then donate! Places like Goodwill, Salvation Army, other non-profit charity stores and your local mission or women’s shelters are usually happy to take your items!

RECYCLE

TURN THEM IN

Did you know stores like H&M and Levi & Strauss accept old clothing for recycling? You can bring your items to accepting stores, drop them off and perhaps enjoy a “thank you” discount!

TEXTILE RECYCLING

With climate change and our treatment of our planet becoming the forefront in many people’s minds, programs like the Zero Waste Clothing Box by Terracycle, American Textile Recycling Services and Recycle Now offer great options for parting with your garments ethically.

REFURBISH

No more buying cleaning rags! (Can you even buy rags, btw?) Use your old clothing!

HAND THEM DOWN

I remember when I was little and my older cousin had a bag of clothing for me that was too small for her - oh my gosh. It was like Christmas every time. Perhaps you know someone who could benefit from your used items? I know my friends and I trade kids clothes all the time - our kids are similar in age and benefit from our rotating inventory - especially when they are little babies!

UPCYCLE
